Character’s Personality: Quirky is the best way to describe Peony. He knows how to push Jade’s buttons (a feat in and of itself) and he keeps rappigs as pets that live inside his palace. He is an intelligent man and a compassionate ruler, intent on peace and not hung up in pomp and circumstance. Often times he will address guests inappropriately or wear his bedclothes around the palace. Character’s Background: [I made a bunch of this up since not too much is known] Peony, as his friends and family call him, was born into the privileged life as Crown Prince of Malkuth. His parents, Frederick and Adelina, ruled Malkuth as Emperor and Empress. While his father was a firm, tactical man, his mother had a soft heart and often times had to temper her husband’s judgments. As a child, Peony spent most of his days in the palace at Grand Chokmah, studying under tutors and being sheltered from the chaos that existed in the Empire. He was a precocious child, but good hearted. Though he had everything he wanted, he was only allowed to play with Aslan Frings, the son of one of his father’s generals. On his tenth birthday, the Fon Master came to read his birthday score. What was supposed to be a joyous occasion, quickly deteriorated into one of the most terrifying days of his life. The Fon Master sent him out of the room and spoke with his parents for quite a long time. When they emerged, his mother was crying and his father was calling a meeting of his most trusted advisors. He was sent to his room, and a few hours later his mother joined him. She told him they were sending him to live in Keterburg, a town in the north, in order to protect him from a predicted struggle. When he asked her about it, all she told him was that it was foretold that his uncle would attempt to claim succession. She ordered the maids to pack his things and then gave him instructions to use Klaus as his name, follow the orders of the soldiers his father was sending to protect him, and to tell anyone who asked that his parents were wealthy fur traders. With that, she gave him a kiss and cut the fonstone from his hair. Peony arrived in Keterburg to find it a snow-covered resort for nobles. Most of the people who lived there year round were rather poor and worked jobs in the tourism industry. The soldiers his father had sent to protect him were adamant that he remain in the manor. For a few months he obliged them, but wanderlust got the best of him. He climbed out his bedroom window and then down a nearby tree. When he landed on the ground, he followed the path to the square and saw children playing in the snow. He joined them and vowed not to spend another day locked up for the convenience of his father’s soldiers. Thus, sneaking out became a regular practice for Peony, and eventually he found his way to Professor Nebilim’s school. Though she recognized him, she followed his wishes and called him by his assumed name of Klaus. At the school, he met the three people he considered his closest friends: Saphir Wyss, a child gifted with fon machinery, Jade Balfour, a boy able to cast fonic artes that were difficult even for adults and who developed a complex theory called “fomicry,” and Jade’s younger sister, Nephry. (Though he and Nephry were often in the shadow of Saphir and Jade’s prowess, the two of them still studied hard, but preferred subjects of government and strategy.) A few years passed, and everything seemed perfect to Peony. He finally had friends who were actually his friends and not just pretending to be because he was the Emperor’s son. Everything changed when he was fifteen, though. That year, the Professor died in a house fire. Jade was adopted into a famous military family who was fascinated with his fomicry theory. And, Saphir was tapped to begin building fon machines for the Malkuth military. During this time, he and Nephry became close and eventually started dating. Two years later, when both Jade and Saphir were granted a return visit on their 18th birthdays, the four of them were ice skating when Peony noticed the banners on the governor’s house were lowered. He asked why that was, and Jade told him that the Empress had died two nights prior. Struck with grief at the loss of his mother, and angered that he had to learn it such a way, Peony revealed his identity to his friends. (Jade, of course, had suspected, but had said nothing.) His relationship with Nephry deepened, though she often questioned if it was appropriate for a commoner to be with the future emperor. He loved her, and promised that he would never allow politics to come between them. When Peony was 23, his father sent for him, since his uncle had died and the threat had passed. He brought Nephry with him to the capital, promising her that she would be accepted despite her concerns. He replaced the fonstone in his hair and became part of court, asking Nephry to stay with him in Grand Chokmah. At first, she agreed. But then she suddenly disappeared, leaving behind only a small dagger and a letter telling him she could no longer be his lover. He went directly to her in Keterburg to get answers, but she could give him none. He offered to renounce his throne for her, but she still refused him. Heartbroken, he returned to Grand Chokmah and worked to help his father during the Hod War and to rule the Empire thereafter. Peony and his father often did not get along, but nothing brought more fights than Peony’s lack of a wife. Despite his flirtatious nature and his father’s wish for him to marry, he refused to have any sort of serious relationship. Through all this time, he remained great friends with Jade and often sought his friend’s counsel on personal issues as well as matters of state. Through Jade he learned that Nephry had decided to marry another, and at that moment he swore he would not take a wife unless it was her. At age 30, his father passed away. On his deathbed, he confessed to his son that he was the cause of Nephry refusing him. Peony listened in horror as he learned that his father had threatened to take Jade from the fomicry research facility and send him to the front lines unless Nephry ended their relationship. Though he mourned his father, he lost much respect for him at that moment. Shortly thereafter, he ascended the throne and began to rule Malkuth. For five years there have been skirmishes but no major battles. He contacted Fon Master Ion to assist with creating a binding peace treaty and asked Jade to help. Before long, the world was in chaos as the outer lands were lowered and the miasma filled the sky. When the final battle was over, he kept his promise of peace with Kimlasca and to bring about a world not dependent upon the score. At age 36, he continues to rule Malkuth to this day, teasing Jade at every opportunity and hoping some day to convince Nephry to have him. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
